Course description: Students’ experiences as learners in comparison to psychological, sociological, and anthropological theories and assumptions about learning and teaching in and out of school. ANGEL course management platform.

I have been striving to incorporate principles of intent participation (Rogoff, et al., 2003) into my teaching, by modeling the use of authentic professional activities in the classroom. For example, students completed a guided, informal research activity to enhance a lesson about Kohlberg’s Moral Development theory. Students interviewed friends and family members about the “Heinz Dilemma,” coded their data, worked with me to analyze their data with statistical software, and discussed conclusions in the light of Kohlberg’s theory.

Further, students spend time working with each other in regular groups (according to future teaching interest area) to deepen their understanding of lesson topics. Classroom time, online discussion boards, Web 2.0 tools, and meetings (face-to-face and virtual) give students opportunities to work through new concepts and use newly acquired skills and information to address educational issues.

Students presenting in TE 150 Spring 2010The students cooperatively created an online presentation about instructional strategies that teachers can use in the classroom. This assignment provided an opportunity for students to research specific instructional strategies, gain some experience using online collaboration tool, and benefit from the shared work of the entire class. In groups, they peer-taught the class about their chosen strategies.

We visited the Michigan State University Museum as a class, to explore applications of Piaget’s developmental theory in a real life learning environment. The students had the opportunity to share feedback with educational professionals at the museum. See the students’ photos in our web album.
